Callisto Network was designed, funded, and launched as a sub-project of the Ethereum Commonwealth. The initial goal of the Callisto Network was researching experimental improvements of the Ethereum protocol that could be proposed to ETC afterwards. Callisto is essentially the grandchild of Ethereum, running the same EVM and ethash algorithm as Ethereum prior to the Merge.
